What is the Rarest Gemstone?

Painite is said to be the most rarest gemstone in the world. This gem comes in reddish brown, orange or pink colours and has a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale. Painite is one of the rarest minerals found on Earth. It was first discovered in the 1950s, and since then, only a few specimens have been found of it.

New deposits of Painite were found in Myanmar in the early 2000s. Its crystal structure is hexagonal, and it looks most like a garnet. The trace elements are Zirconium and Boron, which gives this gem a unique optical property.

The name Painite comes from the gemologist who found it - Arthur C.D. Pain.

What are the Rarest Gemstones in the World?

Let's move on and learn about more rare gemstones. These gemstones are scarce and unique, and you will only find them either by chance if you keep digging or in the collections of enthusiasts and gemstone lovers.

Tanzanite

Next in our list of rarest and unique gemstones of the world comes the blue tanzanite stone. This gem is known for its healing powers and comes in a beautiful dark blue or violet colour. The hardness on Moh's scale is 6.5 to 7. Yet there is only one source of the gem, Tanzania, where it was found in the 1960s and was named after. Tanzania is located near Mount Kilimanjaro's base. Since this stone is found only in one place, it makes it a very scarce gemstone, a rare one too.

Because of the stunning hue of the Tanzanite stone, it is a popular choice of jewellery. There is enough supply and demand for the gem, but since there are no more sources of the gem and it is found only in a 4 km wide area, it is predicted that its supply can be depleted in the next 20 to 30 years. Alexandrite

Next is the Alexandrite gem, which is known for its unique ability to change color. This color-changing stone is quite rarely found in nature, especially of high quality. The Alexandrite stone changes colour according to light; it can look green or red. This gem is often referred to as a Ruby by Day and an Emerald by Night. But it's simply about the optical properties of the gem and the light that makes the color change.

The hardness of Alexandrite is 8.5 and it was first discovered in the 1830s in the Ural mountains of Russia. Today, the gem is found in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil.

The stone was named after Tsar Alexandrite II.

Because of its rarity, it is a pretty expensive gemstone and is highly sought after by collectors.

Grandidierite

Grandidierite is a very rare blue-green gem with a hardness of 7.5. It was first found in Madagascar and is rare because of its complex chemical composition. The stone was discovered in 1902, and since then, small deposits of the gem have been found in Malawi and Sri Lanka. However, high-quality grandidierite stones are still barely found.

Taaffeite

Taaffeite was a stone that was discovered by mistake. In 1945, a gemologist named Richard Taaffe brought a Spinel. But he later came across the knowledge that it was an entirely different stone, a new gemstone indeed. This stone is so rare and similar to spinel that it is often mistaken for it. It is an exceptionally rare gem and is only found in Tanzania and Sri Lanka, where there is an extremely limited supply. It is found in violet, red, and pink hues.

The Jeremejevite came to light in the 19th century in Siberia. The stone comes in a number of colours, including blue and yellow, but it can also be colourless. The stone is rare and formed of aluminium borate mineral. Unlike most gemstones, this stone is often found clear of inclusions and in perfect clarity.

The stone has primarily been found in some regions of Madagascar and Namibia, and it is found in a very particular number.
