This rare emerald cats eye in the cabochon shape was recently graded by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) in Tokyo. It is one of the largest gemstones that has ever been found and weighs around 126 carats. 

The gem has a cat's eye effect in it even when the stone shows all the properties or characteristics of an emerald. The gem has reflective cat eye inclusion or illusions, the chatoyancy effect. This fine tubular inclusion is a natural occurrence and when light falls on the gem, the band of light formed perpendicularly is clearly visible, bright and beautiful. 

The cat's eye emerald stones are very rare and this one takes the cake because of its weight and beauty. The stone features whitish granular flake-like inclusions as well as some tiny whitish crystals which are feldspar. 

The GIA reports mentioned that the stone have the cat’s eye appearance because of the rain-like inclusions which are seen in the gem. There are narrow parallel tubes which reflect the light back from the surface and so we see the cat eye phenomenon.

Origin of the Cats Eye Emerald Stone 

As per the GIA report, the stone shows the characteristic that it naturally formed in Brazil. The mineral concentration of the emerald stone points to the formation properties from Brazil origin and the inclusions also reflect the same. The inclusions were consistent with those found in Brazil in the Belmont mines of the Minas Gerais. 

The Cats eye emerald stones found up until now are mostly from Brazil and Zambia.
